Most current leadership development programmes either use individual coaching or coaching approaches in syndicate group learning, action learning sets or coaching practicum groups.
Syndicate learning, action learning, and 'reflecting teams'
Some of the origins of this facilitated rather than teaching approach to learning was pioneered by Reg Revans in action learning (Pedler, 1996; Revans, 1998) and the Henley Business School, which developed 'learning syndicates' on their early senior management training (Belbin, 2004).
Action learning sets encouraged set members to bring their current workplace challenges and the whole group would be facilitated to help explore the issues and enable the 'problem-holder' to arrive at a new course of action.
